Our take on the Redington Trace 490-4 Fly Rod

The Redington Trace 490-4 is a 9-foot, 4-weight, four-piece graphite fly rod built for trout fishing on freshwater. It uses a medium-fast action, single-foot snake guides to cut swing weight, and a half-Wells cork grip with an aluminum reel seat. It is aimed at newer anglers who want one versatile rod rather than a specialist. The best new price is $199.99 at The Northern Angler Fly Shop as of November 4, 2026, with two stores listing it new.

Best forNew fly anglers buying a first trout rodSmall-stream and river trout fishingAnglers who want one rod for dry flies and light nymphsTravelers who pack a rod in a case

Pros

Medium-fast action is forgiving for beginners but still casts a tight loop
Single-foot guides reduce weight and improve line feel
Four-piece design packs down for travel
Comes with a Cordura rod tube
Cork half-Wells grip and aluminum reel seat hold up to regular use

Cons

A 4-weight is light for windy days, big rivers and heavy nymph rigs
Not the rod for bass, pike or saltwater
Single-foot guides can bend more easily than double-foot guides if knocked
At $199.99 it sits close to the price of some faster, more advanced rods
