Is the CP-81 worth $99?

At $99 at Best Buy as of November 4, 2026, you pay for the clear retro look and the bundled Koss headphones. A basic cassette player costs less; a vintage deck with better sound costs more and needs servicing.

Does it need batteries or can it plug in?

It is battery operated and takes AA batteries. No AC adapter or rechargeable battery is listed, so budget for AA cells.

Can it record, or only play?

It records as well as plays. There is a microphone jack for an external mic, and recording uses a standard cassette tape.

What comes in the box?

The player and Koss x Retrospekt p/21 headphones. Batteries and tapes are not listed as included.

How does it compare with a vintage Walkman?

The CP-81 is new, has USB-C and a warranty path through the seller, but it lacks features like Dolby noise reduction and tape-type selection that better vintage Walkmans had. Vintage units often need belt and capacitor repairs.

Only one store lists a new price, $99 at Best Buy as of November 4, 2026, so there is no lower price to wait for right now. Watch for holiday sales at that store.

Our take on the Retrospekt CP-81 Portable Cassette Player

The Retrospekt CP-81 is a clear-plastic portable cassette player that plays and records tapes, with a built-in microphone jack, headphone jack and USB-C. It ships with Koss x Retrospekt p/21 headphones and runs on AA batteries. At $99 at Best Buy as of November 4, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against. It is a nostalgia and starter-tape item, not a hi-fi deck.
