Is the X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex worth it over the X Ultra 4?

The fifth generation keeps the same formula: Contagrip outsole, advancedCHASSIS and GORE-TEX. If you already own the 4 and it fits well, the upgrade is modest. Buy the 5 if you want the current model at $174.95 at Backcountry.com as of November 4, 2026.

How waterproof is it?

It uses a GORE-TEX PFC-free membrane plus a Matryx textile upper, so rain, puddles and wet grass stay out. Water can still enter over the low collar in deep water or stream crossings.

It comes in regular width with an 11 mm drop and a stable, protected feel. Many hikers go up a half size for thicker socks or long descents, since the toe box is not roomy.

What is the weight and drop?

380 g per shoe and an 11 mm heel-to-toe drop. That is light for a waterproof hiking shoe and suits a quicker pace.

Can I use it for running or everyday wear?

It is a hiking shoe, not a trail runner; the chassis and protection add stiffness. It works fine for walks and travel, but runners usually prefer a lighter, more flexible shoe.
