Is the frame lock better than a zipper?

It is stronger against forced opening and less prone to zipper blowouts. The trade-off is extra weight and no expandable give.

Is 27 inches carry-on size?

No. At 27 inches it is a checked bag and exceeds carry-on limits on most airlines.

How much does it weigh?

The frame and hard shell make it heavier than a typical zippered 27-inch bag. Check the airline's checked weight limit before packing.

What colors does it come in?

Asphalt Black and Glacial Silver.

When is the best time to buy it?

The current $217.59 at Kohl's as of November 6, 2026 is already low against its usual pricing. Watch for holiday and luggage sales for further drops.

Our take on the Samsonite Framelock Max Large Spinner

The Framelock Max Large Spinner is Samsonite's 27-inch hard-shell checked suitcase, built around a frame lock that replaces the usual zipper closure with a latch-and-frame system. It rolls on four spinner wheels and comes in Asphalt Black or Glacial Silver. At $217.59 at Kohl's as of November 6, 2026, it sits well below the typical asking price for a 27-inch hardside from a major brand, making this a strong point in its price history.

Best forFrequent checked-bag flyersTravelers who want a hard shellBuyers who dislike zipper failuresOne- to two-week trips

Pros

Frame lock closure is sturdier than a zipper and harder to force open
Hard polycarbonate-style shell resists scuffs and light rain
Four spinner wheels roll smoothly and handle tight airport aisles
27-inch size covers roughly one to two weeks of packing
Large price gap between the two stores makes comparison worthwhile

Cons

Frame lock adds weight and leaves no give for overpacking
No zipper means no expandable section
Hard shell has no exterior stretch pocket
27 inches is too big for many carry-on limits
