Our take on the Samsung HW-Q65C 5.1-Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer & Dolby Atmos

The Samsung HW-Q65C is a 5.1-channel soundbar with a wireless subwoofer, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X processing, and HDMI eARC. It is 40.6 inches wide and 2.2 inches tall, so it sits under most 55-inch and larger TVs without blocking the screen. Q-Symphony pairs it with select Samsung TVs for synchronized sound. It is a mid-range bar; the best price seen recently sits near the low end of its range, so it is a fair buy at that level rather than a deep discount.

Best forMovie and sports watchers who want surround effects without rear speakersOwners of a Samsung TV who want Q-SymphonyGamers using Game Mode ProSmall to mid-size living rooms
Pros
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X give height and width effects from one bar
  • Wireless subwoofer adds real bass with no cable run
  • HDMI eARC passes lossless audio and simplifies one-cable setup
  • Low 2.2-inch profile clears most TV screens
  • Q-Symphony uses the TV's own speakers alongside the bar on Samsung sets
  • Subwoofer level is adjustable from the remote
Cons
  • No rear speakers, so surround is virtual rather than true 5.1
  • No upward-firing drivers; Atmos height is simulated
  • Bass output is modest for large rooms
  • No Wi-Fi or built-in voice assistant; Bluetooth only for streaming

Questions and answers

Is the HW-Q65C worth it over a cheaper 3.1 bar?
Yes if you want Atmos and DTS Virtual:X processing and a wider soundstage. A 3.1 bar saves money but drops the height and width effects.
Does it have rear speakers?
No. The 5.1 figure comes from the bar's front and side drivers plus the wireless subwoofer. Surround is virtual, not from speakers behind you.
Will it work with a non-Samsung TV?
Yes. Connect over HDMI eARC or optical and you get Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. Q-Symphony only works with select Samsung TVs.
What is in the box?
The soundbar, the wireless subwoofer and a remote control. HDMI and optical cables are not included.
How wide is it, and will it fit under my TV?
It is 40.6 inches wide and 2.2 inches tall. That fits under most 55-inch and larger TVs without covering the picture.
When is it cheapest?
Soundbars like this drop most during Black Friday and pre-Super Bowl sales. Check the price history before buying at full price.
