Our take on the Sealy Posturepedic Ripley 13" Firm Tight Top Mattress + Box Spring

The Sealy Posturepedic Ripley is a 13-inch firm innerspring mattress with a tight top, sold as a set with a matching box spring. It uses a coil support core with a firm feel and carries a 500-pound maximum weight limit. The tight top has no pillow-top cushioning, so it sleeps cooler and sits flatter than plush models. It suits back and stomach sleepers and heavier adults who want a hard, supportive surface.

Pros
  • Firm tight top resists body impressions better than pillow-tops
  • 13-inch height fits standard deep-pocket sheets
  • 500-pound weight limit covers most couples
  • Coil core gives a springy, easy-to-move-on feel
  • Made in the US with a matching box spring included
Cons
  • Firm surface is too hard for many side sleepers
  • Innerspring transfers motion between partners
  • No memory foam or pressure-relief layer
  • Box spring adds height and needs a frame
  • Spot clean only, no removable cover

Questions and answers

Is the Ripley firm good for side sleepers?
Usually not. A tight-top firm innerspring gives little shoulder and hip cushioning, so most side sleepers do better on a plush or pillow-top model. Back and stomach sleepers are the better fit.
Do I need the box spring?
The set includes one, and it raises the mattress and spreads weight on a traditional frame. If you have a platform bed or adjustable base, you can use the mattress alone.
How firm is it really?
It is a true firm: minimal give on top over a stiff coil core. Shoppers used to a medium mattress often find the first weeks hard.
What sheets fit a 13-inch mattress?
Use deep-pocket sheets rated for 13 to 15 inches. Standard 12-inch sheets will pull off the corners.
How long does a Sealy Posturepedic innerspring last?
Most owners get seven to ten years from a firm tight-top set with regular rotation. Sagging usually shows first at the edges.
