Our take on the Sensormatic Style Handheld Detacher AM Hard Tags

The Sensormatic Style Handheld Detacher is a portable tool for removing AM hard tags from merchandise, sold to retailers and resellers rather than to everyday shoppers. It works on acousto-magnetic tags with a stated detection area of 100-150mm and runs on a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included. It is a niche accessory, so its price tends to stay steady rather than swing with seasonal sales.

Best for
Retail staff removing AM hard tags at the counter
Resellers and secondhand sellers with tagged stock
Small shops that want a handheld detacher instead of a counter unit
Pros
  • Handheld and cordless, so it works anywhere on the sales floor
  • Stated 100-150mm detection area covers typical AM hard tags
  • Simple one-button operation with no setup
  • Runs on a common 9V battery
Cons
  • Battery is not included, so it is unusable out of the box
  • Works only on AM hard tags, not RF or other tag types
  • No battery-level indicator or auto-off is stated
  • Generic build quality varies between sellers

Questions and answers

Will it detach any security tag?
No. It is built for acousto-magnetic (AM) hard tags. RF tags and ink or cable tags need a different detacher.
Does it come with a battery?
No. It takes a 9V alkaline battery, which you have to buy separately.
How close does the tag need to be?
The stated detection area is 100-150mm, so hold the tag within about 10-15cm of the detacher.
Is this the right tool for a home shopper?
Usually not. It is meant for retail staff and resellers who remove tags from stock, not for consumers.
When is the price lowest?
This is a low-volume accessory, so discounts are rare. Compare across stores rather than waiting for a seasonal sale.
