Our take on the Serta Five Star 12" Mattress in a Box

The Serta Five Star 12" is a firm hybrid mattress sold compressed in a box, built with an innerspring core topped by gel memory foam. It comes in a Queen at 60 by 79.5 inches and 12 inches thick, and Serta lists it as compatible with adjustable beds. At $337.18 at Wayfair as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of what this model has sold for, and only three stores carry it new, so comparison shopping is quick.

Best forBack and stomach sleepers who want a firm surfaceShoppers on a tight budget who still want a spring coreGuest rooms and rentals where a boxed mattress is easier to move inPeople pairing a mattress with an adjustable base
Pros
  • Firm feel with a spring core under gel memory foam
  • 12-inch profile gives it more substance than thin boxed mattresses
  • Sold compressed, so it fits through tight hallways and stairs
  • Listed as adjustable-bed compatible
  • Queen at $337.18 at Wayfair as of November 5, 2026 is a low price for a hybrid
Cons
  • Firm is firm: side sleepers and light sleepers may find it hard
  • Innersprings can transfer motion between partners
  • Gel memory foam layer is thin, so cooling and pressure relief are modest
  • Only three stores sell it new, which limits price matching
  • Boxed mattresses need time to fully expand after unboxing

Questions and answers

Is the Serta Five Star 12" good for side sleepers?
It is a firm mattress, so most side sleepers will want more cushioning at the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers are the better fit.
Does it work with an adjustable bed?
Yes. Serta lists the Five Star 12" as an adjustable-bed-compatible model, so it can flex on a power base.
How long does it take to expand after unboxing?
Expect it to reach full height within about 24 to 48 hours. Sleep on it sooner if you need to, but give it a day or two to fully loft.
Is $337.18 a good price for this Queen?
It is a low price for a 12-inch hybrid Queen, and only three stores sell it new, so there is little room to undercut it. Check the other two stores before buying.
What is the difference between this and a memory foam mattress?
This one has an innerspring core, so it feels bouncier and more supportive than an all-foam bed. The gel memory foam on top is a thin comfort layer, not the whole mattress.
What comes in the box?
The mattress arrives compressed and rolled in one box. A foundation or frame is sold separately.
Where is the Serta Five Star 12" Mattress in a Box cheapest?
At Wayfair, for $337.18, 46% off, as of our latest check.
What do buyers say about the Serta Five Star 12" Mattress in a Box?
Rated 4.3 out of 5 from 284 ratings.
Where can I buy the Serta Five Star 12" Mattress in a Box?
