Our take on the Shure SM7dB

The Shure SM7dB is the classic SM7B broadcast dynamic with a built-in active preamp that adds +18 dB or +28 dB of clean gain, plus a bypass switch that returns it to stock SM7B behavior. It keeps the flat wide-range response, cardioid pattern, bass roll-off and presence boost switches, internal shock isolation and effective pop filter that made the original a podcast and vocal staple. It is heavy at 837 g and needs phantom power for the preamp. Its latest best price is $159 at Distritech as of November 3.

What reviewers say

Owners of the SM7 line praise the build, hum rejection and broadcast-ready voice sound. Reception of the dB version is mixed: the added gain is convenient, but some users report the preamp colors the signal or adds noise, and the 3.7 out of 5 from 3 ratings reflects that split.

Pros
  • Clean, natural voice reproduction
  • Solid metal build and effective shock mount
  • Gain boost simplifies setups with weak interface preamps
Cons
  • Preamp can add audible noise at +28 dB

Questions and answers

Is the SM7dB worth it over a plain SM7B?
If your interface has weak gain and you would otherwise buy an inline booster, the SM7dB saves a box and a cable. If you already have plenty of clean gain, a standard SM7B costs less and sounds the same in bypass.
Does it need phantom power?
Yes, the built-in preamp needs phantom power. The bypass switch lets it run passive like an SM7B, so it still works on interfaces without phantom power.
How does it compare with the SM7B?
Same capsule, body and switches, plus the active gain stage. In bypass it should match the SM7B; with the boost engaged it is louder but slightly less transparent.
What is in the box?
One SM7dB, a close-talk windscreen and a 3/8-inch thread adapter. No XLR cable is included despite the 15 ft cable length listed.
Will it work for loud sources like drums or guitar cabs?
Yes. The 180 dB max SPL and bypass switch suit loud sources, and the bass roll-off helps tame proximity effect.
When is it cheapest?
Shure gear discounts around major sales events and Black Friday. The current low is $159 at Distritech as of November 3.
What do buyers say about the Shure SM7dB?
Rated 3.7 out of 5 from 3 ratings.
