Our take on the SmartWash+ Automatic Upright Carpet Cleaner and Shampooer Machine

The Hoover SmartWash+ is an upright carpet shampooer that cleans on the push stroke and dries on the pull stroke, with no trigger to hold. Auto Mix dispenses the right amount of solution, HeatForce warms the air to speed drying, and FlexForce PowerBrushes work deep dirt and pet messes out of carpet. It is a full-size machine at 18.9 lbs with a 1-gallon clean tank and a 0.5-gallon dirty tank, so it suits whole-room cleaning more than quick spot work. It ships with a 2-in-1 Pet Tool, a stair tool, an 8 ft hose and a storage bag. No current price was provided, so check the live comparison for where it sits against its recent range.

Questions and answers

Is the Hoover SmartWash+ worth it over a cheaper carpet cleaner?
If you clean whole rooms or have pets, the trigger-free design and faster drying are the main reasons to pay more. For occasional spot cleaning, a smaller and lighter machine does the job for less.
How does it compare with the Bissell Revolution Hydrosteam?
Hoover claims a 35% faster dry time than the Bissell Revolution Hydrosteam. The Bissell adds steam and heated cleaning, which the SmartWash+ does not have; the Hoover keeps operation simpler with push-to-clean and pull-to-dry.
Does it heat the water or use steam?
No. HeatForce warms the air to help carpets dry faster, but the cleaning solution is not heated and there is no steam mode.
What comes in the box?
The machine, a 2-in-1 Pet Tool, a stair tool, an 8 ft hose, an accessory storage bag and a sample bottle of Hoover cleaning solution.
How big are the tanks and how often do I refill?
The clean tank holds 1 gallon and the dirty tank 0.5 gallon, so expect to empty the dirty tank about twice per clean-tank fill. Large rooms may need one refill.
When is it cheapest?
Carpet cleaners tend to drop around major sales and during spring cleaning season. Check the price history chart before buying to see if the current price is near its low.
