Our take on the Somnr Musical Piano Mat

The Somnr Musical Piano Mat is a battery-powered floor piano with 19 keys, aimed at children aged 3 to 6. Kids step or dance on the mat to play notes, so it mixes music play with movement rather than sitting at a keyboard. It runs on AA batteries, so there is no cord to trip over. No current price was provided, so check the latest comparison before buying.

Pros
  • 19 keys give a wider range than small 8-key toy pianos
  • Play by stepping on it, which suits energetic kids
  • Battery power means no cords near young children
  • Rolls up for storage and travel
  • Simple enough for a 3-year-old to use alone
Cons
  • Only rated for ages 3 to 6, so it is outgrown quickly
  • AA batteries add ongoing cost and run down with heavy play
  • Soft mat keys give less pitch control than a real keyboard
  • Volume and sound quality are basic toy level
  • Not a substitute for a keyboard if the child gets serious about music

Questions and answers

Is the Somnr Musical Piano Mat worth it?
For a 3- to 6-year-old who likes moving around, yes. It is a simple, low-cost first music toy. If you want real piano practice, buy a small keyboard instead.
What batteries does it need?
It runs on AA batteries. Buy rechargeable AAs, since heavy play drains them quickly.
What ages is it for?
The maker recommends ages 3 to 6. Older kids will likely find the 19 keys and toy sound limiting.
How many keys does it have?
19 keys, more than the 8-key floor pianos common at this size. That gives a wider range of notes.
Can it be rolled up for storage?
Yes, the mat design rolls up, which makes it easy to store or take to a friend's house.
When is it cheapest?
Toy pianos usually drop around back-to-school and holiday sales. Compare store prices before buying.
