Do these speakers need an amplifier?

Yes. They are passive, wired speakers, so you need an AV receiver, stereo amp or multi-zone amplifier. They have no built-in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or streaming.

How much power do they need?

They handle up to 150 W RMS at 8 ohms with 90 dB sensitivity, so a receiver rated around 50 to 100 W per channel is plenty for most rooms.

How deep is the ceiling cutout?

The speaker is 5.3 inches deep, so check that your ceiling cavity has at least that much clearance before cutting.

Can I use them outdoors?

No. They are rated for indoor use only, not for outdoor or damp locations.

Is $249 a good price?

Best Buy lists them at $249 as of November 8, 2026, and it is the only new price listed. With no other prices to compare, judge it against typical pricing for 8-inch in-ceiling pairs.

Can I paint the grilles?

Yes. The magnetic grilles come off easily and can be painted to match your ceiling.

Our take on the Sonance 8" 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers

The Sonance 8" 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers are passive, wired in-ceiling speakers built for whole-house and multi-room audio. Each speaker pairs an 8-inch woofer with a silk-dome tweeter in a 2-way crossover, handles up to 150 W RMS at 8 ohms, and reaches down to 40 Hz. Magnetic grilles make installation and painting clean, and the 5.3-inch depth fits most standard ceiling bays. At $249 at Best Buy as of November 8, 2026, this is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against.
