Our take on the Sony 85” Class X80K 4K Ultra HD LED

The Sony X80K is an 85-inch 4K LED TV running Google TV, with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support and three HDMI inputs. Its main draw is sheer size at a lower price than Sony's Mini LED and OLED sets, but it uses a 60 Hz panel and direct-lit backlight without local dimming, so contrast and motion are modest. The latest best price is $1,598 at Best Buy as of November 3, well below its $2,799 launch price and near the low end of its recent range.

Questions and answers

Is the Sony X80K worth it at $1,598?
At $1,598 at Best Buy as of November 3, it is a lot of screen for the money and a fair buy if size is your priority. If you care about deep blacks or 120 Hz gaming, spend more on a Mini LED or OLED set.
How does the X80K compare with the X90K?
The X90K adds full-array local dimming, higher brightness and 120 Hz with HDMI 2.1, so it handles HDR and gaming better. The X80K is cheaper and larger per dollar but gives up contrast and smoothness.
Does it support 120 Hz or VRR for gaming?
No. The panel is 60 Hz and the HDMI inputs are 2.0, so there is no 120 Hz mode or variable refresh rate. It is fine for casual console play but not for competitive gaming.
What is in the box?
The TV, a remote control, the tabletop stand legs and power cable. You supply your own HDMI cables and wall mount if you go that route.
Is 85 inches too big for my room?
For a typical viewing distance of 9 to 12 feet, 85 inches is immersive but not overwhelming. Measure your wall and seating distance first, and check that doorways and stairs can fit the box.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on this set have fallen around Black Friday and during spring clearance, and the current $1,598 is close to its recent low. Waiting for a major sale may save a little more, but stock on 85-inch models can disappear.
