Our take on the Spotnails VRN45 Coil Roofing Air Nailer

The Spotnails VRN45 is a pneumatic coil roofing nailer that drives full round head nails from 7/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. It holds 120 nails in a metal-housed magazine, weighs 5 lbs 6 oz, and has a 360-degree adjustable exhaust and an ergonomic rubber grip. A restrictive-contact trigger and dry-fire lockout add safety on steep decks. The best new price is $188.95 at Best Materials as of November 4, 2026, and only one store lists it new, so comparison shopping is limited.

Questions and answers

Is the Spotnails VRN45 worth it for a roofing crew?
It is a solid mid-priced coil nailer with the features roofers expect: light weight, a 120-nail magazine and a restrictive trigger. At $188.95 at Best Materials as of November 4, 2026, it is competitive with other full round head coil nailers. With only one new listing, check that the store has stock and a return policy.
What nails does the VRN45 take?
It uses 0.120-inch diameter wire-collated coil nails with full round heads, from 7/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch long. That covers standard 3-tab and architectural shingles. Do not run clipped-head or strip nails in it.
What air pressure does it need?
Spotnails rates it at 80 to 100 psi. Set the regulator at the low end and raise it only if nails sit proud; there is no separate depth dial listed. A small pancake compressor may struggle to keep up, so use a compressor with enough CFM for continuous nailing.
How heavy is it for overhead work?
It weighs 5 lbs 6 oz, which is on the lighter side for a coil roofing nailer. That helps on steep roofs and long days of nailing overhead. The rubber grip and 360-degree exhaust also make extended use more comfortable.
What comes in the box?
You get the nailer, a plastic carrying case and a pair of safety glasses. Nails and the air fitting are not included, so buy a coil of 1-1/4 inch full round head nails and a quick-connect coupler with it.
When is the best time to buy it?
Roofing tools usually see the deepest discounts in late fall and winter, outside storm season. Right now the best new price is $188.95 at Best Materials as of November 4, 2026, from a single listing, so watch for a second store to list it and compare.
Where is the Spotnails VRN45 Coil Roofing Air Nailer cheapest?
