Our take on the Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie

A two-volume hardcover set from Abrams collecting Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for the original Star Wars trilogy, with sketches, paintings and production pieces reproduced at large size. It is a collector's object as much as a reading copy: heavy, slipcased and built for display. At $217.77 at Target as of November 7, 2026, the new price sits at the top of its recent range, so buyers are paying a premium rather than catching a markdown.

Best forStar Wars fans interested in how the original trilogy was designedConcept art and illustration collectorsGift buyers looking for a display-quality coffee-table setArtists studying McQuarrie's painting and design process
Pros
  • Large reproductions show McQuarrie's brushwork and detail clearly
  • Covers the full original trilogy, from early sketches to finished paintings
  • Two-volume slipcased hardcover built to last and to display
  • Abrams' art-book production quality: strong paper and color printing
Cons
  • Very heavy and bulky; not a book to read in bed or carry
  • Premium price, and the new price is near its recent high
  • Art-heavy with limited behind-the-scenes text
  • Takes up serious shelf or table space
