Is this set worth it for a hobbyist?

If you cut or replace nuts more than once or twice, yes. For a single nut job, a tech or a single-gauge file is cheaper.

What gauges does it cover?

Six double-edge files cover twelve slot widths across common electric and acoustic string gauges. Check the listed widths against your string set before buying.

How does it compare with single-edge nut files?

It covers more gauges per file and costs less than buying twelve single files. Single files let you match an exact gauge and replace one worn size.

How long do the files last?

With light hobbyist use they last years. Pros who cut many nuts should expect the edges to dull and plan on replacement.

Six double-edge nut files with rubber-coated handles. No nut-slotting gauge or safe-edge file is included.

When is the price lowest?

StewMac runs periodic sales, and prices on this set have moved within a modest range. Compare the current price against its recent history before buying.

Our take on the StewMac Double-edge Nut Files

A six-piece set of double-edge nut files from StewMac, a supplier known for lutherie tools. Each file cuts two slot widths, so six files cover twelve gauges, and the 3-7/8 in cutting edges are sized for guitar nut work. Rubber-coated handles give grip during slow, controlled strokes. It is a specialty tool aimed at builders and repair techs rather than casual players.
