Is the DX1222 a standalone NAS?

No. It is an expansion unit with no processor or network ports, and it only works when connected to a compatible Synology NAS over the expansion port.

Does it come with 12 TB of drives?

The listed 12 TB is a capacity figure, not a drive bundle. Confirm with the seller whether drives are included, because expansion units are often sold as empty chassis.

Which Synology NAS models support it?

Support depends on the host model's expansion-port specification. Check Synology's compatibility list for your NAS before buying.

How much capacity can it hold?

Capacity depends on the drives you install and the host's limits. Twelve bays allow large arrays, but the maximum is set by drive size and the host NAS.

Is it worth it over a second NAS?

It is worth it if you want more bays managed under one system. A second NAS costs more but adds its own processor and network access.

This listing states no written warranty. Ask the seller about coverage before ordering.

Our take on the Synology 12 Bay Desktop NAS Expansion Unit DX1222

The Synology DX1222 is a 12-bay desktop expansion unit that adds raw storage to a compatible Synology NAS over a single expansion port. It is not a standalone NAS: it has no CPU of its own and must be cabled to a host unit. The 12 TB figure is a preinstalled capacity, not the maximum, so the chassis is built for far larger arrays. It is a niche add-on, and its price is driven by the chassis and backplane rather than by drives.
