Questions and answers

Is the Tecsun PL-660 worth it for a beginner?
Yes. It is easy to tune by keypad and has the sensitivity to pull in international broadcasts with its whip or the included wire antenna. It costs more than basic portables but gives you SSB and sync detection you would otherwise pay much more for.
Does the PL-660 receive single sideband?
Yes. It has SSB with fine tuning, which lets you hear ham radio and utility stations. You will need to adjust the fine tuning control carefully to clarify the voice.
What batteries does it use?
It runs on four AA batteries, so you can use alkalines or rechargeables. It also works from the included AC adapter or a USB power source with the right cable.
How does it compare with the Tecsun PL-880?
The PL-880 adds a larger speaker, more memories and better audio, but costs considerably more. The PL-660 is smaller and cheaper while still offering SSB and sync detection.
What comes in the box?
The radio, a wire long-wire antenna with clip, an AC adapter, a carry pouch and a manual. Earphones are not always included, so check the listing.
When is the price lowest?
Shortwave radio prices move around holiday sales and when a newer model launches. Watch the price history here and buy when it dips below its recent range.
