Our take on the Tracer Nova 26" Men's Beach Cruiser Bike

The Tracer Nova is a single-speed men's beach cruiser with a hi-ten steel frame, rigid fork and 26-inch whitewall tires on 2.125-inch rubber. It stops with a coaster brake, so there are no cables or levers to maintain, and the swept cruiser geometry suits riders from about 5 feet to 6 feet 2 inches. At roughly 35 lbs it is heavy, which is normal for a steel cruiser but noticeable on hills. It is built for flat, casual riding rather than speed or distance.

Best forFlat beach paths and boardwalk cruisingRiders who want low-maintenance single-speed simplicityCasual riders 5'0" to 6'2"Buyers wanting classic whitewall cruiser looks
Pros
  • Coaster brake needs no cables, levers or pads to adjust
  • 26 x 2.125 whitewall tires roll smoothly and look the part
  • Wide 250 lb load capacity
  • Simple single-speed drivetrain with little to go wrong
  • Swept-back cruiser frame is comfortable for upright riding
Cons
  • 35 lbs is heavy to carry or pedal uphill
  • Single speed limits it to flat terrain
  • Hi-ten steel frame and fork are heavier and rust-prone versus chromoly or aluminum
  • Coaster brake only brakes the rear wheel
  • Rigid fork and no suspension pass road bumps straight to the rider

Questions and answers

Is the Tracer Nova good for hills?
No. It is a single-speed with a coaster brake, so climbing is hard work and you cannot shift down. It suits flat beach paths and boardwalks.
What height rider fits this bike?
Tracer lists it for riders from about 5 feet to 6 feet 2 inches. Outside that range, fit and comfort will suffer.
How does the coaster brake work?
You pedal backward to brake the rear wheel. There are no hand levers, which keeps maintenance low but means only the rear wheel brakes.
Is it hard to assemble?
Like most bikes shipped in a box, it arrives partly assembled. Expect to fit the front wheel, handlebars, seat and pedals, and to check brake and tire pressure before riding.
How much does the Tracer Nova weigh?
About 35 lbs. That is typical for a steel cruiser but heavy if you need to carry it up stairs or load it on a rack.
Where can I buy the Tracer Nova 26" Men's Beach Cruiser Bike?
5 stores we checked sell it, including eBay, Chico Bikes, EpicWheelz.com, Tracer Bikes, Upzy.com.
