Will these stick to my vent?

Only if the vent frame is ferrous metal such as steel or cast iron. Aluminum, plastic and brass grilles will not hold the magnets.

Can I use them on a fireplace that is in use?

No. Use them only on a cold, unused fireplace or duct vent. Blocking an active fire or flue is a safety risk.

How big a vent do they cover?

Each cover is 8.46 inches long. Measure your vent opening and frame before buying, since the width is not stated.
