Our take on the Until August: A Novel

Until August is Gabriel García Márquez's final novel, published in 2024 in English translation, about a woman who takes annual solo trips to a Caribbean island and begins reexamining her marriage. It is short, spare, and written late in the author's life, so it reads differently from his lush classics. The best new price is $12.22 at Target as of November 7, 2026, and only two stores list it new, so the spread between sellers is narrow.

Best forGarcía Márquez completistsReaders who want a short one-sitting novelFans of late-career, restrained literary fictionBook clubs looking for a compact discussion book
Pros
  • Short enough to read in one or two sittings
  • Late, spare style that shows a different side of García Márquez
  • Hardcover and paperback editions both available
  • English and German translations exist
  • Strong premise: a yearly solo trip and a marriage under review
Cons
  • Published posthumously and reportedly assembled from an unfinished manuscript
  • Some readers find it thin next to his major novels
  • Little plot movement; more meditation than story
  • Not the place to start with García Márquez
