Questions and answers

Is the Vasque St. Elias worth $179.73?

At $179.73 at REI as of November 3, 2026, it is a fair price for a GORE-TEX leather backpacking boot with a Vibram Megagrip sole. The catch is that only one store lists it new, so you have little room to price-shop.

How does it compare with lighter Vasque hiking boots?

The St. Elias is a heavier, stiffer leather backpacking boot than Vasque's lighter synthetic hikers. Choose it for load carry and wet weather; choose a lighter boot for fast day hikes.

Is it really waterproof?

Yes. It uses a GORE-TEX membrane plus a full leather upper, which handles rain, wet grass and shallow stream crossings. Water can still enter over the ankle collar in deep water.

How does the St. Elias fit?

It runs on the narrow side for some wearers, and the stiff leather needs a break-in period. Try it with the socks you hike in and size up a half size if you have wide feet.

What is in the box?

You get the pair of boots and the stock laces. Insoles and care products are not included.

When is it cheapest?

End-of-season clearance and holiday sales are the usual windows for hiking boots. With only one new listing at $179.73 as of November 3, 2026, watch that price rather than expecting a store-to-store discount.

Where is the Vasque Men's St. Elias Waterproof Hiking Boots cheapest?

At REI, for $179.73, as of our latest check.

What do buyers say about the Vasque Men's St. Elias Waterproof Hiking Boots?
