Pros
  • Nine-layer build gives more cushioning than a thin traditional tatami mat
  • Folds up and ships with a storage bag and fastener straps

Cons
  • 3.5 in of foam is firm; side sleepers may find it too hard
  • Folding creases can be felt under the back until the mat settles
  • Not a true rush-straw tatami; it is a foam-filled mat with a tatami-style cover
  • Cover is not removable for washing on most versions

Questions and answers

Is this a real tatami mat?
No. It is a foam-filled floor mat with a tatami-style woven cover, not rush-straw tatami. It is softer and cheaper than traditional tatami.
Is it firm enough to sleep on every night?
It is on the firm side, closer to a futon pad than a mattress. Side sleepers often want an extra topper; back sleepers generally find it fine.
Can I wash the cover?
The cover is generally not removable, so spot clean it. Use a mattress protector if kids or pets will be on it.
How big is it folded?
It folds into roughly a third of its 80-inch length, which is why the storage bag and fastener straps are included. Exact folded size is not published.
When is the best time to buy?
At $70.90 at Target as of November 7, 2026, it is already at the low end of its range. Watch for dorm-season sales in late summer for the deepest cuts.
