Our take on the Vital 72 Hour Emergency Survival Kit for Family Bug Out Bag

The Vital 72 Hour Emergency Survival Kit is a family bug-out bag built around a 20 x 12 x 10 inch water-resistant polyester backpack weighing about 171 ounces. It packs water, food, a 96-piece camo first aid kit, safety goggles, a glass breaker, and a hand-crank flashlight, radio and charger, aimed at hurricane, flood and tornado readiness. At $173.95 at Sirius Survival as of November 3, 2026, it is the best new price among the two stores listing it. That is a mid-range price for a pre-assembled family kit, and you pay a premium over buying the components separately.

Best forFamilies building a first 72-hour kitHouseholds in hurricane, flood or tornado zonesPeople who want a ready-made bag instead of assembling oneCar or closet backup for short-term evacuations
Pros
  • Covers the core 72-hour needs: water, food and first aid in one bag
  • Hand-crank power for flashlight, radio and charger means no batteries to stock
  • Water-resistant polyester bag with a glass breaker and safety goggles
  • 96-piece first aid kit is more complete than most bundled kits
  • Family-sized 20 x 12 x 10 inch pack holds extras
Cons
  • About 171 ounces (roughly 10.7 pounds) is heavy for one person to carry far
  • No listed headcount or calorie count, so you must check the food and water suit your family size
  • Hand-crank charging is slow compared with a power bank
  • Water resistance is not waterproofing; the bag needs shelter in heavy rain
  • Only two stores list it, which limits price competition

Questions and answers

Is the Vital 72 Hour kit worth it?
It is worth it if you want a grab-and-go bag without assembling one yourself. At $173.95 at Sirius Survival as of November 3, 2026, you pay a convenience premium over buying water, food, first aid and a crank radio separately.
How many people does it cover?
The kit is marketed for families, but the listing does not state a headcount or calorie count. Check the food and water quantities against your household size and add supplies for each extra person.
Do I need batteries for the flashlight or radio?
No. The flashlight, radio and charger run on a hand crank, so there are no batteries to replace. Cranking takes time, so expect slow charging for phones.
Is the backpack waterproof?
No, it is water resistant. The polyester bag sheds light rain, but in a storm or flood keep it under cover or inside a dry bag.
What is in the box?
Water, food, a 96-piece camo first aid kit, safety goggles, a glass breaker, and a hand-crank flashlight, radio and charger, all in a 20 x 12 x 10 inch polyester backpack.
When is it cheapest?
Emergency kits often drop during National Preparedness Month in September and around hurricane-season promotions. Track the price history and buy below the current $173.95 if it dips.
