Our take on the Waddell Oak Board

The Waddell Oak Board is a single unfinished red oak board, 3/4 in thick, 6 in wide and 4 ft long, with square edges and a smooth face. It is sold for DIY shelving, crafts and small woodworking projects, and the unfinished surface takes stain, oil or paint. At $12.02 at eBay as of November 6, 2026, it is the lowest new price among the two stores listing it, so there is little spread to shop around.

Pros

Red oak is hard and takes stain and finish well
Smooth, unfinished face is ready for sanding and coating
Square edges make butt joints and shelf installs simple
Common 3/4 in thickness fits standard shelf pins and brackets
4 ft length suits closet and small shelving spans

Cons

Nominal 6 in width; actual width can run narrower
Single board per order, so larger projects need several
Unfinished wood needs sealing, especially in damp rooms
Made in China despite the North American style label
Red oak grain can look busy under a clear finish
