Is WD-40 a real lubricant?

It is a light, solvent-based lubricant meant for freeing parts and displacing moisture. For bearings, chains or repeated load, use a proper grease or chain oil.

Can I use it on power tools?

Yes, on metal parts such as chuck threads, blades and rusted fasteners. Keep it off motor windings and plastic housings, and wipe off excess.

Does it stop squeaks for good?

No. It quiets hinges and latches quickly, but the effect fades. A silicone or lithium grease lasts longer on moving parts.

What sizes does it come in?

The spray is sold in cans from a few ounces up to large shop sizes, and a liquid version comes in a can with a drip spout. Check the listing for the exact size.

Is it safe on electronics?

It displaces water from contacts, but it is not a contact cleaner and leaves a residue. Use an electronics-safe cleaner for circuit boards.

Our take on the WD-40 Lubricant

WD-40 Multi-Use Product is the original spray lubricant: a solvent-based formula that loosens rusted parts, displaces moisture and quiets squeaks. It is not a true grease or long-term lubricant, so it suits quick fixes rather than bearings or heavy machinery. The best new price is $5.98 at Lowe's as of November 6, 2026, and only two stores list it new, so the spread between sellers is narrow.

Pros

Loosens rusted and stuck metal parts fast
Displaces water from tools and electrical contacts
Works as a light cleaner on grease and grime

Familiar, widely available formula

Cons

Not a lasting lubricant; parts can squeak again soon
Solvent smell is strong in enclosed spaces
Can attract dust when left as a film
Not for sealed bearings, bike chains or high-load parts
Aerosol cans are awkward to store and dispose of
