Our take on the Weaver Leather Supply #D5041 Chicago Screws

These are Weaver Leather #D5041 Chicago screws: two-piece brass fasteners that join layers of leather and can be unscrewed later. The post is 3/16 inch in diameter and 3/8 inch long, driven with a T-15 star bit or a flat head, and the grippers under the head help lock the screw in place. They suit belts, bags, cases and bridles where you want a removable rivet rather than a permanent one.

Best forLeathercrafters building belts, bags and cases
Repairing bridles, straps and tack
Anyone who wants removable, reusable fasteners
Makers using 3/16 inch holes
Pros
  • Two-piece design unscrews for later adjustments
  • Solid brass resists rust and takes a clean finish
  • Grippers under the head reduce loosening
  • T-15 star drive resists cam-out better than a plain slot
  • Works with standard 3/16 inch leather punches
Cons
  • 3/8 inch post only spans thin stacks of leather
  • Brass heads can show scratches with heavy use
  • Small screws are easy to lose during assembly
  • Needs a T-15 bit or flathead driver, not a Phillips

Questions and answers

What thickness of leather do these fit?
The 3/8 inch post is the total span, so plan on roughly 1/4 inch of leather or less once the two heads take up space. Thicker stacks need a longer post.
Do I need a special tool to install them?
No special press is needed. A T-15 star bit or a flathead screwdriver turns the screw while you hold the post side.
Will they come loose on a belt or bag?
The grippers under the head bite into the leather and help hold the screw. Check them occasionally on items that flex a lot, like belts.
Are they reusable?
Yes. Unlike rivets, Chicago screws unscrew, so you can swap straps or open a case and reassemble it.
What size hole do I punch?
Punch a hole that matches the 3/16 inch post diameter so the post passes through snugly without tearing the leather.
Brass or nickel finish?
Both are brass underneath. Pick solid brass for a warm antique look or nickel brass for a silver tone that matches hardware.
