Our take on the Werner 20 ft. Aluminum Type II Extension Ladder

The Werner 20 ft. aluminum Type II extension ladder is a two-section ladder for reaching roofs, gutters and second-story work. It is rated Type II, 225 lb, with slip-resistant Traction-Tred D-rungs, spring-loaded locks and mar-resistant end caps. It meets ANSI and OSHA standards. It is a general-duty ladder, not a contractor-grade Type IA.

Questions and answers

Is the Werner 20 ft Type II ladder strong enough for me?
It holds up to 225 lb total, including you, your clothes and anything you carry. If you weigh close to that or haul tools and paint, step up to a Type IA 300 lb ladder.
How high will it actually reach?
A 20 ft extension ladder reaches roughly 17 ft at a safe working height, enough for most one-and-a-half-story roofs and gutters. The base must sit on firm, level ground.
Should I buy Type II or Type IA?
Type II suits occasional homeowner work. Type IA carries 300 lb and is stiffer, which matters for contractors or anyone near the weight limit.
Does it come with a stabilizer or standoff?
No. The ladder ships as the two-section ladder only. A separate stabilizer helps on soft ground or against gutters.
How do I store a 20 ft extension ladder?
Store it flat and supported along its length in a dry place, such as a garage wall or under a deck. Laying it on its side outdoors invites warping and corrosion.
When is the best time to buy?
Ladder prices tend to dip in late fall and winter, outside storm and gutter-cleaning season. Check the price history before buying in spring.
What do buyers say about the Werner 20 ft. Aluminum Type II Extension Ladder?
Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 936 ratings.
