Our take on the Western Digital PC SN730 256 GB Solid State Drive - M.2 2280 Internal - PCI Express NVMe

The WD PC SN730 is an OEM-grade M.2 2280 NVMe SSD with 256GB of storage, PCIe Gen3 x4 and rated sequential speeds of 3,400 MB/s read and 3,100 MB/s write. It was built as a drive for laptop makers, so it turns up as new old stock rather than in retail packaging. At 256GB it is a small drive by current standards, and its 200 TBW endurance rating is modest. It suits a secondary slot, a basic office build or a replacement for a worn-out boot drive in an older machine.

Best forReplacing a failed or small boot drive in an older laptop or desktop
A cheap secondary drive for documents and light apps
Budget office or home PCs where capacity needs are small
Buyers who want an OEM WD drive without retail-box pricing
Pros
  • Strong sequential speeds for a Gen3 drive: 3,400 MB/s read, 3,100 MB/s write
  • Single-sided M.2 2280 card that fits most laptop slots
  • Low power draw, with a 3.5mW sleep state
  • WD in-house controller and 96-layer 3D NAND
  • 200 TBW endurance is fine for light daily use
Cons
  • 256GB fills fast with games, photos or video
  • Gen3 speeds only; no benefit from a Gen4 or Gen5 slot
  • OEM part, so warranty support usually runs through the seller, not WD retail
  • No heatsink and no cloning software in the box
  • DRAM-less tiered caching can slow down on long sustained writes

Questions and answers

Is 256GB enough for a Windows laptop?
It fits Windows and everyday apps with room to spare, but games and media will fill it quickly. Treat it as a boot drive and add a second drive for large files.
Will it work in a PCIe Gen4 slot?
Yes. It is backward and forward compatible, but it runs at Gen3 speeds, so you will not get Gen4 throughput.
Is it worth it over a newer Gen4 drive?
Only if the price is clearly lower. A current Gen4 500GB or 1TB drive costs a bit more and gives more space and speed.
Does it come with a heatsink or screws?
No. It is a bare OEM drive, so check that your motherboard or laptop has its own mounting screw.
What is its endurance rating?
200 TBW, which is roughly 100GB of writes a day for five years. That is plenty for normal desktop use.
When is it cheapest?
OEM drives like this are usually discounted as new old stock when sellers clear inventory. Watch for clearance listings rather than launch pricing.
