Our take on the X98 X9X S500 TV Stick Android 11 Media Player

The X98 X9X S500 is a budget Android 11 TV box built on the Amlogic S905Y4 quad-core chip with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. It outputs up to 4K with HDR10+ support, connects over dual-band 2.4G/5G WiFi, and adds Bluetooth 4.x and a TF card slot. Storage comes in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB eMMC variants, so check which one a listing sells before buying. It is a low-cost way to add streaming apps to an older TV, not a replacement for a smart TV or a high-end media player.

Pros
  • Amlogic S905Y4 handles 4K decoding and HDR10+

  • TF card slot expands storage beyond the built-in eMMC
  • Android 11 with access to common streaming apps
Cons
  • 2GB DDR3 RAM is tight for heavy multitasking
  • 10/100Mbps Ethernet caps wired speeds at about 100Mbps
  • Bluetooth 4.x, not the newer 5.x standard
  • 8GB base storage fills quickly with apps
  • No touchscreen and no built-in display; needs a TV and HDMI cable

Questions and answers

Is the X98 X9X S500 worth it?
For a secondary TV and basic streaming, yes: it is cheap and covers 4K HDR10+ playback. If you want smooth app switching or heavy gaming, spend more on a box with 4GB RAM.
Does it really play 4K?
The S905Y4 chip decodes 4K and the box supports HDR10+. Actual quality depends on your TV, HDMI cable and the app's stream.
How much RAM and storage does it have?
It has 2GB of DDR3 RAM. Storage is sold in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB versions, so confirm the size on the listing; a TF card adds more.
Can I connect it with an Ethernet cable?
Yes, but the port is 10/100Mbps, so wired speed tops out around 100Mbps. Dual-band WiFi may be faster on a good 5G network.
What comes in the box?
Typically the TV box, a power adapter (DC 5V/2A), an HDMI cable and a remote. Check the listing, since bundles vary.
Is it good for gaming?
No. The Mali-G31 MP2 GPU and 2GB RAM suit casual or cloud games at best; demanding Android games will stutter.
