Six products we're watching
From the basket's first day of checks, November 6. Same item at every store below, new and sold by the retailer itself, at the same moment. Here's what's already interesting, and what Black Friday will tell us.
LG 65″ NU70 Nano 4K Smart TV (2026)
$472.50 apart- Best Buy$449.99$299.99

- ABC Warehouse$379.99$299.99

- Abt$329.99
- Target$772.49
The same 65-inch TV was $299.99 at Best Buy and at LG's own store, and $772.49 at Target, at the same moment. Three stores selling it for $299.99 each showed a different “was” price: $379.99, $449.99 and $749.95.
Watching: Does Target come down on Black Friday? And did any store ever really charge one of those “was” prices?
Shark Stratos Upright Vacuum with DuoClean PowerFins
Already half price- Target$529.99$264.99
- Best Buy$529.99$264.99

Three weeks before Black Friday, Target, Best Buy, Kohl's and Lowe's already had it at $264.99, half the $529.99 that Nordstrom, Wayfair and Bloomingdale's were asking.
Watching: Will the Black Friday price beat $264.99, or is the best deal already here?
- Crate & Barrel$999.95$549.95
- Best Buy$999.99$549.99
- SharkNinja$999.99$549.99
- Target$999.99
Best Buy and Shark's own store listed it at $549.99, “was $999.99”. At that same moment, Target was charging $999.99.
Watching: Do Best Buy or Shark ever charge $999.99 in our window? Does Target's price move?
Apple AirPods Pro 3
$49 under Apple- Target$250$199.99
- BJ's$199.99
- Apple$249

Target and BJ's had Apple's newest AirPods Pro at $199.99. Apple, Best Buy and Staples were at $249 to $249.99. Target's “was” price, $250, is a dollar above what Apple charges.
Watching: Does Black Friday go below $199.99? Do Apple and Best Buy follow?
Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer

Watching: When one store cuts the price, do the others match, and how fast? Our extra sale-week checks will show.
Samsung 100″ M90H Mini LED 4K TV
“Was $2,500”- Abt$1,797.99
- ABC Warehouse$1,797.99
- Samsung$2,500$1,799.99
- Best Buy$2,500$1,799.99
- CDW$2,499.99
Samsung and Best Buy both listed the 100-inch TV at $1,799.99, “was $2,500”. The only store near $2,500 was CDW, a business supplier, at $2,499.99.
Watching: Had we seen Samsung or Best Buy charge $2,500? That's exactly the “was” question this study asks.
Listed prices on Google Shopping at the time shown (Eastern), before shipping, tax and coupons, for listings our strict check confirmed are the identical item. Only well-known retailers and brand stores are shown. Prices change: check before you buy.
Three questions we'll answer
Each answered on its own, with its own numbers. We won't merge them into a single "fake deal" score.
Lower than the store's own recent price?
On Black Friday, was each store's price for an item below the lowest price we saw that store charge for it in the weeks before?
Cheaper at another store at that moment?
At the very moment a store showed its Black Friday price, was the identical item listed for less at another big store?
Had we seen the “was” price?
When a store showed a higher "was" price, had we seen it actually charge that price in the weeks before?

The kinds of things people buy on Black Friday, each with a brand and a model number or barcode, and no clothing or shoes, where sizes make matching unreliable.

How they were picked. We started from every product our price history had seen new at three or more of these retailers in the 10 days before: Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy's, Home Depot, Lowe's, Kohl's, Nordstrom, Wayfair, Newegg, B&H Photo, JCPenney, Bloomingdale's, Zappos, Belk. 10,336 had a brand and a model number or barcode, and 3,771 of them fell in the categories above. Within each category we put them in random order, from a saved random seed (1509978806), and took them in that order. A product counted only if we could find its Google Shopping page and a separate AI check confirmed that page was the identical item; 129 of the 1,101 we looked at were passed over for that reason, and the next one in the order taken instead. Tablets and smartwatches had fewer candidates than their share, so they have fewer products.
Why freeze it first. The list was saved before any Black Friday price was read and won't change. Nobody, us included, can swap in products that make a better headline once the sales start.
How each check works
Same time every day
Each product has its own fixed time between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern, spread evenly across the basket, and keeps it every day, before and during the sales. A check counts for its day only if it was read within 45 minutes of that time, so no day gets extra chances to catch a low price.
Every store at one moment
Each check reads Google Shopping's page for the product: up to 13 stores, each with its price, shipping, seller, stock, its own listing title and link, and any "was" price it shows, all at the same moment.
The identical item, strictly
A separate AI model reads each store's own listing title, with prices hidden, and keeps only listings that are the identical item: same model, size, capacity, pack count and generation. Colour may differ. Bundles, accessories, refurbished and open-box listings are out, and titles that don't say enough to be sure are left out too.
Kept for good
Every store row of every check is kept permanently, not deleted after a few months like everyday price history, so any finding can be checked later. We publish totals and examples, not the raw prices.
Sale week adds checks. From November 23 through Cyber Monday, each product is also checked 6, 12 and 18 hours after its daily time. Those extra checks feed only a separate finding on how often prices changed within a day; the daily comparisons use the regular check alone.
The rules, set before the sales
Decided before collection began, so the results can't shape them. We'll report against exactly these.
- Periods. The baseline runs from the first day through November 22. Early deals, November 23 to November 25, are reported separately. The sale runs from Thanksgiving, November 26, through Cyber Monday, November 30, with Black Friday, November 27, also reported on its own.
- Two measures, side by side. A sale price is below the lowest we observed if it's more than 1% and at least $1 under that store's lowest baseline price for the item, and below typical if it's that far under the store's median baseline price.
- Enough history. A store's listing needs at least 7 baseline days to be compared at all. Listings with fewer are counted as "limited history".
- The same listing throughout. A store's price series is one listing: the same item and the same link. If a store switches colour or version, that's a new series, never a price drop.
- What's included. New items only. Out-of-stock listings are excluded; "in stock" and "stock not stated" are reported separately. Prices that need a coupon, code, membership, subscription, trade-in or monthly payment plan are left out of the comparisons and counted separately. Marketplace sellers are kept apart from the retailer's own listings.
- Listed prices. Comparisons use the listed price; the price with stated shipping is a second result. Comparisons between stores use only prices read at the same moment.
- "Was" prices. We record each store's reference price and its label word for word. The only question we ask of it is whether we saw the store charge that price in the baseline: "observed", "not observed in our window" or "not enough history".
- Coverage. Every scheduled check is recorded, including any we miss. Our target is 95% of checks collected on time each day, and we'll publish the actual figure.
What this study can't show
- Google lists up to 13 stores for a product; a store missing from a check is "not listed", never "out of stock".
- Amazon doesn't appear in Google's store lists for these products, so this study doesn't cover Amazon's prices.
- The basket is products already sold at three or more big stores; it isn't everything on sale, and Black Friday-only models aren't in it.
- The baseline starts on November 6. Our wording will be "the lowest we observed", never a claim about a store's entire price history, and never "fake".
