Best affordable unlocked smartphones for prepaid carriers

Top pick: Google Pixel 8a — the best balance of camera, software support and price for a prepaid SIM. It's a clean unlocked Android phone that takes a prepaid SIM or eSIM, and Pixel updates keep it current for years.

Who the others suit:

• Samsung Galaxy S23 (Unlocked) — if you want a compact, fast flagship feel and a great screen; a generation older but still excellent.
• Samsung Galaxy A15 5G — the sensible budget Android: big AMOLED screen, long battery, fine for calls, maps and streaming.
• Google Pixel 10a — if you'd rather buy the newest Pixel and keep it longer.
• Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24 Ultra — if you want a premium camera and can stretch the budget.
• OSCAL FLAT 3C / BLU K2 — only as spare or first phones; check the band list against your carrier before buying.

Before you buy, confirm the phone is listed as factory unlocked and supports your prepaid carrier's bands (Verizon-based prepaid needs VoLTE support).
