Best checked suitcases

Top pick: Travelpro Platinum Elite softside checked spinner. It's the one built for people who actually check bags — a tough, expandable softside with eight spinner wheels and a strong warranty reputation, and it swallows a week's clothes without fighting the zipper.

Who the others suit:

• Away The Large — biggest capacity here; best if you overpack and want a clean, hard shell.
• Monos Hybrid Trunk — deep trunk shape for bulky gear; premium feel.
• DELSEY Helium Aero 31" — light hardside for long trips at a modest price.
• Samsonite Freeform — the budget-friendly hardside; fine for occasional trips.
• July Checked Expandable — good middle ground if you want a hard shell with expansion.

Skip the no-name $40–$90 shells if you fly often — wheels and zippers are the first things to fail.
