Best mechanics tool sets

Top pick: DEWALT 192-Piece Mechanics Tool Set — the best balance for a home garage. It covers SAE and metric in one case, and the 72-tooth ratchets with 5° swing get into tight spots under a hood or behind a sink. It's the set I'd hand someone who wants one box that does both jobs.
Who the others suit:
- GearWrench 243-piece sets — the step up for regular auto work: 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2-inch drives in a three-drawer box, built to be used hard.
- Craftsman 320-piece — most pieces per dollar if you want maximum coverage in a single case.
- GearWrench 121-piece — a compact 1/4 and 3/8 set for small jobs and tight storage.
- 799-piece kits — broad household coverage, but the sockets are the weak point for real wrenching.
- DEWALT 142-piece — a lighter, simpler starter set.
