Best novelty lighting for the home

Top pick: BrightSide Mushroom Confetti Glass Lamp — a glowing glass mushroom is the sweet spot for novelty lighting: playful enough to be a talking point, small enough to sit on a nightstand or shelf, and rated well by a lot of buyers.

Who the others suit:

• Urban Shop Rotating Mirror Disco Ball Lamp — for a party corner, dorm or teen room; the spinning light does the entertaining.
• Urban Shop Food Figural LED Mood Lights (2-pack) — for a kitchen shelf or a fun gift; two little food-shaped glows.
• xoyoeif Fiber Optic Lamp — for a retro, colour-changing bedside glow on a whim.
• Blue, Gold and White Novelty Table Lamp — if you want novelty that still reads as grown-up decor in a living room.
• Silver Iron Novelty Table Lamp — for a taller statement piece on a side table.

Skip the plain "novelty" lamps with linen drum shades if you're after whimsy — they're conventional lamps in a novelty category.
