Best tablets for kids

Top pick: the Kids Armor Tab 10.1" — the best balance of a big, bright screen and real durability, with a strong rating from buyers and a modern Android build, so it won't feel slow in a year. Best for kids around 6+ who watch, read and play.

• Contixo V9 Kids HD 7" — the safest bet for younger kids: small enough for small hands, well rated, and Contixo's kid software is genuinely set up for children.
• Contixo 10" A100 — if you want the big-screen experience for less; a simple, no-frills option for shared family use.
• WUIUHOU 7" — the budget pick for a first tablet or a spare; shockproof case and parental controls built in, and the most-reviewed of the small ones.
• TABURETO 10.1" — a middle ground when you want a larger screen without paying flagship money.

Skip the 7" no-name models with thin review histories if the tablet has to last more than a year.
