Best upright carpet shampooers for home use

Top pick: Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro — the upright most homes end up happy with: power brushes plus heated air for deep cleaning, a hose for stairs and upholstery, and a strong owner rating. It's the safest all-rounder for carpets and pets.

Who the others suit:

• Hoover SmartWash+ — easiest to use: it auto-mixes solution and pushes forward on its own, good for quick, frequent clean-ups.
• Shark CarpetXpert — best if you want a light, maneuverable machine for everyday spills.
• Bissell Big Green — for heavy, whole-house jobs; big tanks but heavy to carry.
• Tineco Carpet One Cruiser — smart sensors and heated wash if you like tech and want spot-and-go cleaning.
• Dual Spin Pet — a budget-friendly starter for pet messes in small spaces.

Skip commercial extractors like the Sanitaire for home use — heavy and overkill.
