AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX vs AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7965WX
Buy the 7965WX for new workstation builds: it is faster per core, uses DDR5, and runs on the current sTR5 platform. Choose the 5965WX only if you already own a WRX80 board and DDR4, since it drops into that platform. The 7965WX costs more than the 5965WX, and the gap buys roughly 40% higher boost clocks and a newer memory standard.

What reviewers say
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX
Owner feedback on the 5965WX centers on its multithreaded throughput in rendering and simulation workloads. Buyers accept the platform cost as the price of ECC memory and PCIe lane count. Complaints focus on heat, power draw and the cost of WRX80 boards.
- Multithread performancePraisedOwners report large gains in rendering and encoding over consumer 16-core chips.
- Heat and powerCriticisedSustained loads push the 280W chip hard, requiring large coolers and good case airflow.
- Platform costCriticisedWRX80 boards and 8-channel ECC memory kits make the total build pricey.
Questions and answers
- Which is better for rendering and simulation?
- The 7965WX. Same core count, but higher clocks and DDR5 bandwidth make it faster in most multi-threaded workloads. The 5965WX remains capable if it is already in a working build.
- Can I put the 7965WX in my WRX80 board?
- No. The 7965WX uses socket sTR5, and the 5965WX uses sWRX8. They are not interchangeable, so each needs its own motherboard platform.
- Is the 7965WX worth the extra cost?
- For a new build, yes, if you need the extra speed and DDR5. If you already own a WRX80 board and DDR4 memory, the 5965WX avoids the cost of a new board and RAM.
- Which runs cooler?
- The 5965WX at 280W TDP runs cooler than the 7965WX at 350W. The 7965WX needs a stronger cooler and power supply.
- Do either have integrated graphics?
- No. Both need a discrete graphics card.
- Which supports more memory?
- The 7965WX platform supports up to 1TB of DDR5. The 5965WX uses DDR4 at up to 3200 MHz, with capacity set by the WRX80 board.
