- Which is better for wet-weather day hikes?
- The Asolo Fugitive GTX. Its GORE-TEX Performance Comfort lining and nylon-suede upper suit wet trails, and its softer flex is more comfortable out of the box. The Scarpa is also waterproof but stiffer and heavier.
- Which boot lasts longer?
- The Scarpa Zodiac Tech GTX's full Perwanger suede leather upper is more abrasion-resistant than the Asolo's nylon mix. The Asolo can be resoled, which extends its life, but its upper wears faster on rocky ground.
- Is the Scarpa worth the extra money?
- Only if you scramble or use crampons. At recent lows the Scarpa cost about $45 more ($199.50 vs $154.11). For regular trail hiking the Asolo covers the same ground for less.
- Which is better for steep rock and scrambling?
- The Scarpa. Its Vibram BAS Precision outsole, flat climbing toe zone and stiffer 2D PU midsole give more edging precision. The Asolo's softer flex and self-cleaning lugs favor trails over rock.
- Which is more comfortable on long hikes?
- The Asolo, thanks to its cushioned PU midsole and shock absorption. The Scarpa's stiffer stability-focused midsole takes more break-in and feels firmer underfoot.
- Do either work with crampons?
- The Scarpa Zodiac Tech GTX is crampon-compatible through its Vibram BAS Precision outsole. The Asolo Fugitive GTX is not designed for crampons.
