Which is better for a total beginner?

The Donner DEP-20. It has weighted keys, lesson mode, an LCD, and 238 tones for $309.99 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026. The Kawai is the better instrument, but a beginner gets more guidance features for less money from the Donner.

Is the Kawai ES120 worth the extra $259?

Yes if you need Bluetooth, three pedals with half-pedal, and a lighter piano to carry. If it stays in one room and you are learning, the Donner covers the basics for much less.

Which has the better piano sound?

The Kawai is generally regarded as having the more realistic piano tone and action. Donner buyers themselves complain that the grand piano tone falls short of expectations, though the 50 W of speaker power is louder on paper.

Which is more reliable?

The Kawai has the stronger track record. Donner reviews mention keys that stopped working within a month and power adapters that broke after a few months, so budget for a replacement adapter or a return.

Can I move either one easily?

The Kawai is the portable one, marketed as compact and lightweight with Bluetooth for cable-free setups. The Donner weighs 15.4 kg and buyers call it heavy and bulky, so it is best left on a stand.

Do both have weighted keys and USB?

Yes. Both have 88 weighted keys, USB-MIDI, split mode, and recording. The Kawai adds Bluetooth and a third pedal; the Donner adds an LCD, rhythms, and demo songs.
