Do I need a license for the Midland set?

Yes. GMRS operation requires an FCC license. One $35 license covers you and your immediate family for 10 years.

Which has the longer real range?

The Midland, on paper and in practice. It is a GMRS radio rated to 36 miles in open terrain; the Cobra is rated to 23 miles. Both figures assume clear line of sight, and hills and buildings cut them sharply.

Is the Cobra set good for hunting or security work?

Yes, for short-range work. The two acoustic-tube headsets keep audio private, and VOX leaves hands free. You give up GMRS power and weather alerts.

Which is better in rain?

The Cobra headset is rated IP54, and the radio is described as waterproof. The Midland radio is JIS4 splash-resistant but not rated for submersion. Neither should be dunked.

Is the Midland worth $20 more?

Yes for most buyers. The extra $20.04 buys GMRS channels, weather scan and alert, a rechargeable pack and a 3-year warranty.

How long do the batteries last?

Midland states about 12 hours per NiMH charge. Cobra does not state a runtime; it runs on 6 AA cells, so carry spares.
