Which is faster for gaming?

The WD Blue SN550. Its NVMe interface reads up to 2,400 MB/s versus 560 MB/s on the SATA 870 EVO. Game load times improve modestly, but large file transfers and level streaming are clearly quicker on the SN550.

Will the SN550 fit my laptop?

Only if the laptop has an M.2 2280 NVMe slot. Many older laptops have just a 2.5-inch SATA bay, in which case the 870 EVO is the drop-in choice.

Both are rated at 600 TBW and carry 5-year warranties, so endurance is a tie. The 870 EVO's DRAM cache gives it steadier sustained write speeds over long transfers.

Is the 870 EVO worth $99 for 500 GB?

Only if you need SATA. At that price you get half the capacity and a quarter of the speed of the SN550. Buy it for compatibility, not value.

Can I use either as an external drive?

Yes. The 870 EVO fits a 2.5-inch USB enclosure; the SN550 fits an M.2 NVMe enclosure. SATA enclosures are cheaper and more common.

Which runs cooler in a laptop?

The SN550. M.2 NVMe drives draw less power at idle and sit flat on the board, while a 2.5-inch SATA drive adds bulk and a cable.
