Is the SN7100 worth the extra over the Blue SN550?

Yes if your board has PCIe 4.0 and you move large files or play big games; the SN7100 is about three times faster on sequential reads. For browsing, office work, and media storage, the SN550 is enough.

Which is better for a laptop?

The Blue SN550. It draws less power and runs cooler, and many laptops only run PCIe 3.0 anyway, so the SN7100's extra speed would go unused.

Both are rated around 600 TBW at 1TB, so endurance is similar. The SN7100's higher speed does not shorten its rated life.

Will the SN7100 work in a PCIe 3.0 slot?

Yes, it is backward compatible, but it will run at PCIe 3.0 speeds, close to the SN550's. Buy it for a Gen4 slot.

Do either need a heatsink?

The SN550 does not. The SN7100 is fine for normal use, but a heatsink helps under long sustained Gen4 writes.

Is the SN7100 good for a PS5?

It meets the speed requirement, but check Sony's heatsink requirements before installing, since the drive ships without one.

WD_BLACK SN7100 1TB NVMe SSD vs WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD 1TB

Buy the WD_BLACK SN7100 for a gaming or workstation build: it is a PCIe 4.0 drive rated at 7,250 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, while the Blue SN550 is an older PCIe 3.0 design that is roughly half as fast. The SN7100 is $199.00 at Amazon as of November 6, 2026, and has been as low as $159.99 on November 2. The Blue SN550 is the cheaper, cooler-running pick for everyday storage and older laptops.
