Which is better for gaming?

The 990 PRO. Its DRAM cache and 7,150 MB/s read speed make it the stronger pick for game loading and large installs, and it costs less right now.

Neither listing gives a terabytes-written endurance rating, so it can't be settled from the specs here. The 990 PRO's DRAM cache generally helps under heavy sustained writes, while the SN5100's 2TB capacity spreads writes over more cells.

Is the WD Blue SN5100 worth the extra $33?

Only if you need 2 TB. At $222.99 versus $189.99 at Newegg as of November 7, 2026, you pay more for double the capacity and slightly faster writes, but you give up the DRAM cache.

Will either fit my laptop?

Both are M.2 2280, PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives. Check that your laptop has a free M.2 2280 slot and that its slot supports NVMe; both also work in a PCIe 5.0 slot at PCIe 4.0 speed.

The SN5100 lists 4.5 W in sleep, and the 990 PRO's power figures aren't given here, so a direct comparison isn't possible. Both benefit from a heatsink under long sustained writes.

Which has better software?

The SN5100 bundles free Acronis True Image for cloning your old drive, which the 990 PRO doesn't. Samsung Magician is a solid monitoring and firmware tool, but it doesn't include a free cloning license.
