About the Apple iPad 4 16GB Wi-Fi Black

The iPad 4 is Apple's fourth-generation 9.7-inch tablet, released in late 2012 with a Retina display, the A6X chip and a Lightning port. It is long out of software support: it tops out at iOS 10, so most current apps will not install. The listing is a refurbished 16 GB Wi-Fi model in black, priced at $84.99 at Walmart as of November 3, 2026, and it is the only new-condition price tracked.

Pros
  • Sharp 2048 x 1536 Retina display for the price
  • Lightning port and A6X chip make it noticeably faster than the iPad 3
  • Solid aluminum build; 23 oz is manageable one-handed
  • Cheap enough to treat as disposable for basic tasks
Cons
  • Stuck on iOS 10; many apps no longer install or update

  • 16 GB fills fast, and there is no SD card slot
  • 1 GB RAM struggles with modern web pages and tabs
  • Battery is likely worn on a refurbished unit; 9-10 hours is a when-new figure
  • No Touch ID, no Apple Pencil support, old Wi-Fi standards

    • What reviewers say

Owner feedback on the iPad 4 is mixed, and the 2.6 out of 5 from 403 ratings reflects that. People who use it for reading and video are satisfied with the screen and build; many others are frustrated by the old iOS, app incompatibility and short battery life on refurbished units.

    Pros
    • Bright, high-resolution Retina screen
    • Sturdy Apple build quality
    • Smooth performance for basic tasks
    Cons
    • Cannot run current apps on iOS 10
    • Short battery life on refurbished units
    • 16 GB storage runs out quickly
    • Heavy for long one-handed reading

    Questions and answers

Is the iPad 4 still worth buying in 2026?
Only for offline video, reading and simple browsing. It cannot run most current apps because it stops at iOS 10, so do not buy it expecting modern app support.
Can the iPad 4 run the latest iOS?
No. Its last supported version is iOS 10, released in 2017, and Apple has not updated it since.
    What is in the box?
This is a refurbished unit, so expect the iPad and a charging cable; a wall adapter and original box are not guaranteed. Confirm the included accessories with the seller before ordering.
How does it compare with the iPad 3?
The iPad 4 uses the faster A6X chip and a Lightning port instead of the old 30-pin connector, so it is quicker and easier to charge with current cables.
    Is 16 GB enough?
Barely. iOS and preinstalled apps take a large share, leaving room for only a few movies or a small photo library, and there is no memory card slot.
    When is it cheapest?
Prices on this model are already low and mostly driven by refurbished stock. Watch for clearance or rollback pricing rather than seasonal sales.
