Our take on the 1:12 Large RC Cars 4WD Remote Control Monster Truck

This is a 1:12 scale ready-to-run monster truck with four-wheel drive, a 2.4 GHz radio and an alloy body. It ships assembled with a rechargeable LiPo pack and off-road tires, so it runs out of the box. It suits backyard bashing and light off-roading rather than serious hobby racing. Prices for 1:12 RTR trucks in this class typically run from about $60 to $150, and the current best price sits in the lower half of that band.

Best forKids 6 and up driving on grass, dirt or gravelAdults wanting a cheap first hobby-grade RC truckBackyard bashing and light trail runningBuyers who want a ready-to-run kit with battery included
Pros
  • Four-wheel drive and big rubber off-road tires give real traction on loose ground
  • 2.4 GHz radio resists interference and lets several trucks run together
  • Alloy body holds up better than the thin plastic shells on cheaper trucks
  • Ships assembled with a rechargeable LiPo battery, so no extra purchase to start
  • 1:12 size is big enough to handle rough ground but small enough for a yard
Cons
  • 1:12 trucks are not fast enough for track racing or big jumps
  • Alloy bodies add weight and can bend in hard crashes
  • AA batteries for the transmitter are often not included
  • Run time per LiPo charge is usually short, so a spare pack is worth buying
  • Replacement parts support varies by seller

Questions and answers

Is this truck worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if you want a cheap, assembled 4WD truck for a yard or park. It is not a serious hobby racer, but it is a low-risk first RC.
How fast does a 1:12 monster truck go?
Most budget 1:12 4WD trucks top out around 15 to 25 mph on a charged LiPo. Expect less on grass or uphill.
How long does the battery last?
Typical run time for this class is 15 to 25 minutes per charge. Buy a spare LiPo pack if you plan long sessions.
What is in the box?
The assembled truck, a 2.4 GHz transmitter, a rechargeable LiPo battery and a charger. AA batteries for the transmitter are often not included, so check before buying.
Is it good for kids?
It is rated for ages 6 and up, and 4WD makes it easier to control on rough ground. Supervise younger kids, since the truck is fast enough to hurt if it hits someone.
When is it cheapest?
Budget RC trucks usually drop around Black Friday, back-to-school sales and end-of-season clearance. Watch the price history rather than buying at full list.
