Our take on the 8' x 20' Clear Vinyl Tarp - 30 Mil Super Heavy Duty Transparent Waterproof PVC Tarpaulin with Brass Grommets

The Xpose Safety CVT30-820-X is an 8-by-20-foot clear vinyl PVC tarp at 30 mil, the heavy end of consumer tarp thickness. The transparent material lets light through, so it works for greenhouse walls, patio enclosures and covers where you want to see what's underneath. Brass grommets line the edges for tie-downs. At 38.5 lb it is a two-person job to hang, and it is not a lightweight camping tarp despite the listing's camping tag.

Best forGreenhouse and cold-frame glazing
Patio, porch and pergola wind screens
Covering equipment or woodpiles while keeping them visible
Dust and weather barriers during renovation
Pros
  • 30 mil vinyl is thick and resists tearing better than 10 to 20 mil clear tarps
  • See-through material passes light and shows what it covers
  • Brass grommets along the edges for rope and bungee tie-downs
  • Waterproof PVC handles rain and hose spray
  • 8 by 20 feet covers a large span in one piece
Cons
  • 38.5 lb makes it awkward to move and hang alone
  • Clear vinyl stiffens in cold weather and can crack if folded sharply
  • No written warranty
  • PVC can yellow and cloud with long UV exposure
  • Heavy for camping use despite the camping tag

Questions and answers

Is 30 mil thick enough for a greenhouse wall?
Yes. 30 mil clear vinyl is stiffer and more tear-resistant than the 6 to 12 mil films sold for greenhouse covers, and it lasts multiple seasons if you keep it out of harsh direct sun. It blocks less light than glass but more than opaque tarps.
Can I fold it up for storage?
Roll it rather than fold it. Sharp creases in thick PVC can crack over time, especially in cold weather. Store it flat or on a wide roll in a mild place.
How do I hang an 8' x 20' tarp that weighs 38.5 lb?
Use the brass grommets with rope or bungee cord and have a second person help. Work from the top edge down, and leave slack so wind can pass rather than pulling the grommets out.
Does it come with a warranty?
No. Xpose Safety lists no written warranty on this tarp, so check the panel when it arrives and keep your receipt.
Is it clear enough to see through?
Yes, it is transparent vinyl, not frosted. Expect some glare and slight distortion, and it will cloud over time with UV exposure.
