Our take on the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

The AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED is Nikon's ultra-wide f/2.8 zoom for FX and full-frame bodies, sold since 2007 and long regarded as one of the sharpest wide zooms made. It uses two ED elements and three aspherical elements, a built-in petal hood and a bulbous front element that cannot take screw-in filters. The best new price is $1,199.95 at eBay as of November 3, 2026, near the top of what this lens has cost new in recent years; used copies in excellent condition typically sell for well under that.

Best forLandscape and architecture shooters on Nikon F mountAstrophotography and low-light interiors at f/2.8Full-frame FX bodies; usable on DX at about 21-36mm equivalentBuyers who want a wide zoom without filters
Pros
  • Very sharp across the frame, even wide open
  • Constant f/2.8 across the 14-24mm range
  • Two ED and three aspherical elements control color fringing and distortion
  • Built-in petal hood; weather-sealed barrel
  • Holds value well on the used market
Cons
  • No screw-in filter thread; front filters need large, costly holders
  • Bulbous front element is exposed and easy to scratch
  • Heavy at about 1,000 g and large in the bag
  • Older screw-type AF motor; no VR
  • New price is high for a 2007 design

Questions and answers

Is the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 still worth buying in 2026?
Yes if you shoot Nikon F mount and want the sharpest ultra-wide f/2.8 for that system. Mirrorless shooters with the FTZ adapter also get good results, but native Z-mount wides are lighter and take filters.
Can I use filters on the 14-24mm f/2.8?
Not standard screw-in filters. The front element is bulbous, so you need a large holder system such as a 150mm filter kit or rear gel filters.
Does it autofocus on all Nikon bodies?
It has a built-in SWM motor, so it autofocuses on bodies with a screw-drive-free mount, including entry-level DSLRs. It does not autofocus on Nikon 1 or non-F mount cameras without an adapter.
Is it worth it over the 16-35mm f/4 or 17-35mm f/2.8?
The 14-24mm is wider and sharper at f/2.8 than either. The 16-35mm f/4 is lighter, cheaper and takes 77mm filters, so choose it if filters and weight matter more than the extra 2mm and speed.
When is the best time to buy it?
New stock is limited and prices are firm; the best savings come from used copies in excellent condition. Watch for bundle deals and holiday sales at the four stores listing it new.
Where is the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED cheapest?
At eBay, for $1,199.95, 20% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED?
4 stores we checked sell it, including eBay, Best Buy, Willoughby's Photo Emporium, Amazon.
