Our take on the Air Vent Automatic Foundation Vent

This is a surface-mount plastic foundation vent for crawlspaces, sized about 17 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall. It opens and closes on its own using a solar-powered thermal actuator, so it vents warm, damp crawlspace air in summer and shuts in cold weather without wiring. Each vent provides 50 square inches of net free area. At $27.92 at Toolbox Supply as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of what the three stores listing it charge.

Questions and answers

Is it worth it over a manual foundation vent?
Yes if you want seasonal shutoff without crawling under the house twice a year. The automatic actuator costs a few dollars more than a plain louvered vent and removes the manual step.
How many vents do I need for my crawlspace?
Code generally calls for 1 square foot of net free area per 150 square feet of crawlspace, or per 1,500 square feet with a vapor barrier. At 50 square inches each, that works out to roughly one vent per 50 to 500 square feet depending on your barrier.
Does it need power or batteries?
No. The Solar Tek actuator runs off a thermal wax motor that reacts to temperature, so there is no wiring, battery or solar panel to maintain.
What size opening does it fit?
The unit measures about 17 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall and 4.2 inches deep. Check your foundation opening against those dimensions before ordering, since it is a surface mount.
When is the price lowest?
Foundation vents tend to dip in late fall and winter, outside crawlspace season. At $27.92 at Toolbox Supply as of November 4, 2026, it is already near the bottom of its three-store range.
Where is the Air Vent Automatic Foundation Vent cheapest?
At Toolbox Supply, for $27.92, as of our latest check.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 from 152 ratings.
