Our take on the Akai MPK Mini Play MK3 Controller Keyboard

The MPK Mini Play MK3 is a 25-key mini keyboard with built-in speakers and a battery compartment, so it plays sounds without a computer. It keeps the MPK Mini's pads and knobs but adds an internal sound engine and a small display for browsing presets. At $129 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent range across the six stores that list it new.

Best forBeginners learning keys and beat-makingTravel and couch sketching without a laptopProducers who want a small MIDI controller with standalone sound
Pros
  • Built-in speakers and battery power for playing anywhere
  • 25 velocity-sensitive keys plus 8 backlit pads and 4 knobs
  • Works as a USB MIDI controller for a DAW as well as a standalone instrument
  • Small enough to fit in a backpack
  • Simple preset browsing on the built-in display
Cons
  • Mini keys feel cramped for players with larger hands
  • Internal sounds are basic compared with software instruments
  • No MIDI DIN output, so hardware synths need USB or a host
  • Pads are smaller than full-size MPC pads

Questions and answers

Is the MPK Mini Play MK3 worth it over the MPK Mini MK3?
If you want to play without a laptop, yes. The Play adds speakers, a battery compartment and internal sounds; the plain MPK Mini MK3 is a controller only and needs a computer or host for sound.
Does it work with a DAW?
Yes. It connects over USB and sends MIDI, so it works as a controller in most DAWs. The internal sounds play on their own without a computer.
How long does the battery last?
It runs on AA batteries for several hours of playing, depending on speaker volume. You can also power it over USB.
Can I plug it into a hardware synth?
Not directly. It has USB MIDI but no 5-pin MIDI DIN output, so hardware synths need a USB host or computer in between.
What's in the box?
The keyboard, a USB cable and starter software. Batteries are not included.
When is it cheapest?
The $129 at B&H Photo-Video-Audio as of November 4, 2026 is already near the bottom of its recent range. Holiday sales are the usual time for deeper discounts.
